Unix Programmer: Wesleyan University (Jul. 1998 - Dec. 2000)

Implemented assorted web and console based applications for Wesleyan University while performing duties as systems administrator. Responsibilities included:
Created CGI replacement for the Unix vacation(1) program, allowing users at Wesleyan to define vacation messages for email correspondence. Written to learn the basics of relational databases and DBI. Created interactive web log installer. Designed and implemented Apache/mod-perl search function for online class registration. Implemented an interactive printer billing system to allow instant access to printer bills for students; and an uniform interface for administrators top print records, change print queues, give student/faculty printing credit, and change criteria for what constitutes "billable" printing. This projects interacted with FRS on a VMS machine, PeopleSoft, Oracle, Mysql, as well as Unix print queues. Implemented an online directory of all electronic course related materials with the help of Oracle, Mysql, LWP, and Apache's mod-rewrite; designed it so that new functionality may be added without little programming skill. Taught anyone who asked anything from basics scripting to advanced object oriented design to good coding style. Wrote C extension to Apache to allow easy access to Wesleyan's private authentication system. Wrote innumerable small time-saving scripts. Helped coworkers, staff, and students with their Perl, Java, lisp, C, and SQL projects. All accomplished while performing primary duties as the sysadmin of a heterogenous Unix environment.

Maintained NIS network for Math/CS department. Wrote shell and Perl scripts to automate backup/recovery, security checking, and user management.
